It is Better to Practice Music With a Used Instrument!

All of us like “new” things and if the price is within our budget, we would
prefer to go for them rather than buy anything second-hand! But if it is
only for practicing a musical
instrument, it would probably be wiser to go in for a used
one; a new one can be bought when you go professional. Another thing to
bear in mind is that your musical instincts will not stop with just an instrument;
there will also be maintenance costs, fees to pay the music teacher, and
money for any upgrades that are required!
Second-hand musical instruments can be found at flea
markets and garage sales. Surprisingly, you may be able to
find something that is of high quality, but very reasonably priced! This
would definitely be a better option instead of getting a brand-new instrument
of not very good quality, or something that is too highly priced for your
pocket. Of course, you will also have to face the fact that a used instrument
comes with no warranties; its long-lasting life is entirely dependent
on how you use it! So, if you feel that this choice is too risky, enquire
around about rental programs offered by music stores.
Now, there are certain aspects to be kept in mind when going in for a
second-hand
musical instrument—
(1) Do not spend on the very first instrument that you see at shops or
sales; do a price comparison first. Find out from various shops about
the costs of new instruments, and check out the differences in prices.
Now, explore the used instrument thoroughly and see if its cost has been
estimated correctly. Only when you are completely satisfied that you are
getting value for your money, go ahead and splurge!
(2) It is possible that you are not very confident about judging the
condition of a used music instrument. It would therefore
be advisable to ask an expert to accompany you. If that is not possible,
your child’s music tutor or a friend who has some knowledge about music
and musical instruments can come with you. The condition of the second-hand
instrument can be judged by playing it, listening to the sounds,
and the general feel of it.
(3) On a final note, it is very important to discover who had owned the
instrument previously. An online shop will not be able to allow contact
between you and the owner, but should be able to assure you of complete
customer satisfaction. In the case that you have problems with your instrument,
you should be allowed to return it and get an exchange. At a garage sale,
you might meet the previous owner of the instrument directly, and he/she
will be able to answer all your questions. If you plan to get it from
a music store, the salesperson might be able to guide you to the person
who owned it earlier.
Now go ahead and enjoy your music!
