Hey, Do You Know Where to Look for Second-hand Stuff?

You might be surprised at the long list of places that offer “used
goods” for sale! The range is vast, right from gently-used
baby clothing to adult dresses, and from appliances to books, music, and
sports equipment. So youngsters looking for some real bargains (because
you have not started earning yet), kids, parents, or pregnant women—everyone
can find something to suit their taste at such places. But you are definitely
going to save some money, sometimes as high as 90%; you would need to pay
through your nose for the very same stuff at a posh departmental store!
Now, where exactly can you go hunting for second-hand stuff that is in
reasonably good condition or requires just a few repairs?
(1) If you are from a small town or a small city, you should be able
to find these on the Main Street—Small Chain Thrift Stores. They even
have sales sometimes to get rid of remaining stock.
(2) A slightly larger city, say with a population of 10,000 or more,
offers National Thrift Stores. Many states in the US can boast of these
stores; they go by the names of Salvation Army, Goodwill, and ARC Thrift
Stores.
(3) Garage Sales are sure to yield bargains, since people are waiting
to dispose off goods that they no longer require. The snag is that you
cannot be sure of what you are really going to see there, because the
sellers are individuals. They are not like thrift stores and resale stores
that can inform you of what they usually display. So, despite visiting
quite a few sales, you might return with nothing to show for your efforts
or you might strike gold at the very first attempt!
(4) Consignment Shops
offer more than just clothing—musical instruments, sports gear, exercise
equipment, home furnishings, art pieces, paintings, guns, bridal wear,
fine jewelry, appliances, and so on. As a matter of fact, large American
cities have upscale consignment stores known as Second-hand Specialty
Stores. Some are extremely specialized in that they carry items of a certain
type only.
(5) Finally, the World Web is always there. Plenty of Resale
Shops, Thrift
Shops, and Consignment
Stores are waiting for you. But of course, ensure that they
are genuine before you part with your cash. Popular sites are Craig’s
List and eBay. They display a vast array of items. Try and keep the delivery
of goods within 100 miles or even lesser of your home; you do not to spend
too much on shipping costs. Sometimes, there are Swap Meets displayed
too, for buying and selling across various states or even countries.
A few considerations to be borne in mind when purchasing used goods—
(1) Please examine the item thoroughly before you purchase it. Clothes
should not have stains that cannot be removed or tears that cannot be
mended. Where other products are concerned, check out if they are slightly
damaged or over-damaged. In case you do not feel confident, ask an experienced
person to tag along with you.
(2) Online shopping can be dangerous if you are a novice in this arena!
You have no way of examining the item beforehand; and if the resale shop
does not allow returns and refunds, you have lost your money. Ensure that
the sellers are thoroughly honest about the condition of the goods (they
can email pictures of the damaged portions). Acquaint yourself with rules
and regulations before you splurge on any items.
(3) Whatever you purchase for your new-born or infant should be perfectly
safe—cribs, child barriers, car seats, toys, etc. There are Thrift Store
Safety Checklists that you can review online before you buy anything.
Check out Recalls.gov and what the US Consumer Product Safety Commission
has to say.
(4) The above-mentioned second-hand
outlets can be utilized to get rid of your own used goods
too. But do be courteous enough to offer only those items that are in
reasonably good condition or those that can be fixed easily. You can sign
up for contracts with online stores after perusing them thoroughly. This
way, you are recycling the money you have spent on your own goods!
