Second hand antique furniture, second hand electrical appliances, second hand carpets
“Oh, I really cannot afford interior decorators; they come real expensive!”
Sounds familiar? Yes, of course, for don’t you have the same complaint
too? You wish your home to look as classy as your next-door neighbor’s,
but have absolutely no clue as to how to go about it! Well, if you are
open to suggestions, use some of ours.
(1) Fortunately, furniture is something that is long-lasting if taken
good care of, and also restorable. So, the first thing you need to do
(since you cannot afford lavish items from regular shops and departmental
stores) is to make a beeline for thrift
stores, consignment
stores, swap
meets, and yard sales. And no, this is not a joke; you do
get marvelous bargains for affordable prices, and even throwaway prices!
After all, these are second-hand or used goods that just require a few
repairs and a bit of painting or polishing!
(2) Even the most antique-looking or the shabbiest pieces can be converted
to look as good as new, provided you let flow your creativity. And if
you do not believe us, ask these innovative women how they transformed
the interiors of their homes with the addition of these “classy” bits
of furniture!
(a) After shelling out just $40 for a hand-carved occasional chair at
a yard sale, one woman added a padded seat made of high-quality material
and made a few improvements—presto, it now occupies a place of pride in
her living room!
(b) Imagine that you find a table lamp with Victorian iron scrollwork
on it and a marble base; what can you do with this lamp that you paid
ten dollars for? Get a great-looking lampshade and gilt the metal with
gold paint. Think it will evoke awe in people who visit your home?
(c) Again, what did this lady do with the occasional table that she bought
for a mere 20 dollars? She used a stencil to create a golden design and
then gave it a glossy black finish. Nothing more needs to be said; you
can visualize the picture for yourself!
(d) Here is another example of a woman who purchased a chaise lounge
chair for $35 and restored it to its original condition with a few repairs
and final touches. Can you imagine the amount of money she managed to
save?
(3) Even if you are just a novice to this idea, do make it a habit to
step into thrift stores every once in a while. Why not go there every
second Monday? Once the weekend rush is over, these stores bring in new
stock on Mondays. This way, you will never want for bargain items.
(4) Since these shop owners display a vast range of products, big and
small, it would help if you keep a list of essential items handy all the
time. You will soon gain expertise on what can be found where.
(5) Yes, be prepared to spend a few hours when you haunt thrift shops.
There will be plenty of things put up for sale, and you will need to sort
them out. At the same time, do not just throw away your money on things
that look irreparable; you should be able to recognize what can be rejuvenated
and what cannot! You would like to have elegant stuff for your home, isn’t
it?
(6) Finally, if you do not feel confident about fixing things, ask the
Internet for help. There are many websites that can give handy guidance
on repairing and recovering used furniture. Take lessons from them.
Thus, all you have to do is get hold of a few essentials and get started!
Few will realize that the “posh” look of your home has been achieved from
junk bought at thrift stores—the rest will just envy you!!
